Pollen pool differentiation in European Beech: How many fathers sire individual mother trees?

Contact: Dr. Andrea R. Pluess: 044 632 8975, andrea.pluess(at)env.ethz.ch

European beech is the most important deciduous tree species in Switzerland and is expected to be highly influenced by the expected longer drought periods under climate change. While regeneration is primarily natural nowadays, artificial regeneration might become important in future as assisted seed migration might be the choice of management for resilient beech forests. This project aims to elucidate the diversity and differentiation of the siring fathers within and among maternal trees. Thereby guidelines for the numbers of sampled seed trees for a diverse next generation will be developed.

The MSc student will sample beech seedlings in a nursery experiment at WSL and use microsatellite markers for fingerprinting. In the lab, the MSc student will extract DNA, run PCRs and use the fragment analyser to determine banding patterns. The method is well established in the lab of Ecosystem Management, including species specific microsatellite markers. Several free-ware programs will be used to determin pollen pool diversity and differentiation.

The earliest starting date is late summer 2012. The thesis can be written in English or German.
